The Way of Wellness - Work Matters

Most of us were born into work lifestyles. Doing all those cute baby things in our cribs was hard work. Managing a smile at a retirement gala after forty years of dedicated service was challenging work. Here’s a thought: What gives our work meaning from the crib to retirement and beyond? The way of wellness can benefit from giving meaning to our work. 

Limitless Leaders, let’s be truthful. Work comes with baggage. Whether in a tenuous work environment filled with stress & frustration or reaping the benefits of a dream job, the meaning we place on our work is a choice. This meaning directly affects our overall attitude. In turn, that attitude enhances our fervor & excellence. As a result, leaders empower others (family, friends, & cohorts) with permission & direction to work better. A win-win.

I remember explaining to my two young daughters that school was their job. They were expected to do their best every day. I encouraged them that if they gave 100%, I would do my job and give 100%. Over the years, these two unique and different girls developed unique and different meanings for their work. Their meanings translated into valued perspectives about work in their adult lives. Was it always easy? No. Was it worth it? Yes. Are they done refining & learning? Never. 

Finding meaning in our work begins intrinsically. Some ideas include getting to know one’s true self, understanding our values, respecting & listening to others without judgment. Other ideas include remembering the first rule our parents taught us – be kind to ourselves and others at all times. Can finding meaning in our work be that simple? 

The path to wellness has many varied paths. Work and the workplace are one path where we will spend a lot of our time, effort, & strength. Why not make the most of it? Our work means our choice and that choice will impact our well-being and wellness. Limitless Leaders, let’s challenge ourselves each day to elevate our work. As we do, we will witness a surge in our character, perseverance, & desire to do our best.
